Oops, there it is !  The diff between 1.4 and 1.5 of bc_supp.h have
specifically that, along with the comment,

                                /* defined as this to avoid to force the   */
                                /* inclusion of bc_supp.o if not needed    */
                                /* (dynam_supp.c uses byte_code)           */

and diff between 1.6 and 1.7 of parse_supp.h, with the comment,

                                /* defined as this to avoid to force the   */
                                /* inclusion of parse_supp.o if not needed */
                                /* (stream_supp.c uses last_read_line/col) */

Both checkins are marked with the CVS comment "updated for MacOS X" . . .
