For the reasons you state, I switched to SWI Prolog a few years back. It's pretty good although I miss something I can't put my finger on with gprolog; I invested a --lot-- of time in it.

Is GNU Prolog still maintained? The last stable version (1.4.5) is from 07/02/19 according to the ftp website. In sourceforge, the last commit on master branch is from 2018-10-23. It is worth trying to submit a patch or contribute somehow?
