Ah the fix is to open up a new emacs - it looks as if there's some corrupted internal data structure which is not getting cleared. I can now view my (imap) inbox without any problems - I discovered I was getting the markerp error on visiting any vm folder (well all the local folders I tried!) which caused me to go for anew session - I tend to leave emacs running for days..
