Ok, in that case, let us do some experimentation to see how bad is the
problem. 

1. Try killing the problematic summary buffer, and regenerating summary.  If
that cures the problem, we know that it is fairly localized.

2. If that doesn't work, do vm-quit-no-change on the problematic folder, and
see if that allows you to continue with the rest of VM.

3. If that doesn't work either, Do vm-quit-no-change on all the open
folders, and see if you can then revisit new folders.

PS: I am a specialist in theory of programming, but the problem of
recovering from errors is so big that it makes my head hurt!  For the
moment, all we can do is to protect against common problems.  I don't think
we can ever get it to be fool-proof.
