Hey, if you can do this as loadable extensions that we can distribute
separately, then it would make sense to link the extension to the local
PNG, SVG, etc libraries.  If this is already being done in the lab, how
about using Xouvert as a base for developement work?  We'd love to get
something like that out to the masses for testing.

We definately would at least like to TRY distributing a loadable
extension that renders images in PNG, JPEG, and SVG formats.  Maybe
three loadable extensions, one per format.  If people used it, and it
turned out to show some speed savings (especially over network), that
would be great.
