Re: [gnugo-devel] Eye pattern 304

Hi,
I just got the patched program and I found that M6 is a very good attacking move. White has to defend at L6. After this GNUGO played H2, which is also a good defend position for the lower side group. Now GNUGO is in a good position to attack the white group.

If GNUGO defended first, white might have the chance to make a better shape around L6.

About the patch paul_3_20.5, which is the one discussed in
this thread, I think the patch was supposed to address the
position at move 62 in the game of S.P. Lee.

But both before and after the patch, GNU Go currently
wants to play at M6, not J2.

J2 is valued 49.38 points and has this move reason:

  J2: owl attack/defend for G2
  J2: owl attack/defend for N3
  J2: 45.39 - change in territory
  J2: 1.81 - strategic effect on H5
  J2: 25.02 - N3 strategic value already counted - B.
  J2: 5.22 - G2 strategic value already counted - A.
J2: 4.34 - total followup value, added 4.34 as territorial followup
J2: 2.17 - added due to followup (4.34) and reverse followup values (0.00)
Move generation values J2 to 49.37

M6 is valued 83.05 points:

  M6: owl attack/defend for N3
  M6: owl attack/defend for L5
  M6: 79.96 - change in territory
  M6: 0.18 - strategic effect on J6
  M6: 0.85 - strategic effect on O5
  M6: 12.62 - N3 strategic value already counted - B.
M6: 4.13 - total followup value, added 4.13 as territorial followup
M6: 2.07 - added due to followup (4.13) and reverse followup values (0.00)
Move generation values M6 to 83.05

----------------------------------

This is after Paul's patch. Before the patch:

  J2: owl attack/defend for G2
  J2: 8.96 - change in territory
  J2: 1.81 - strategic effect on H5
  J2: 6.42 - G2 strategic value already counted - A.
J2: 1.83 - total followup value, added 1.83 as territorial followup
J2: 2.92 - added due to followup (1.83) and reverse followup values (4.00)
Move generation values J2 to 13.69

  M6: owl attack/defend for L5
  M6: 43.11 - change in territory
  M6: 0.18 - strategic effect on J6
  M6: 0.85 - strategic effect on O5
  M6: 10.56 - strategic effect on N3
M6: 2.60 - total followup value, added 2.60 as territorial followup
M6: 1.30 - added due to followup (2.60) and reverse followup values (0.00)
Move generation values M6 to 55.99

----------------------------------

Since GNU think's L5 is critical, this position should be
considered a semeai. Of course W has much more space than
B, so B should defend.

I suppose we should use Paul's patch and also add this
game as a regression.

Dan
