| autoconf 2.54, automake 1.7, and gettext 0.11.5 all with the same
| --prefix value, and I had this problem. What else should I have done?
I honestly don't know. All I can tell is that my Gettext 0.11.5
macros are aclocal-visible here. What --prefix did you give? What
does make -n install give in gettext/m4?

| Yes, I find that behavior of Emacs VC mode annoying as well. If it
| thinks the file is CVS-controlled it won't keep simple backups :(.
