It was designed this way.  Please, revert this patch.

I'm convinced I can get the effect I want using m4.  Reverted.

Incidentally, I think you broke with either revision 1.40 or 1.41. I'm running a make check using 1.40 now, but I'm getting shell syntax errors running testsuite with version 1.41 of and both 1.38 and 1.39 pass without changing the rest of the code.
