I would write your test in terms of the lower-level AC_COMPILE_IFELSE; a check
functionally similar to AC_CHECK_DECL looks like this:
AC_COMPILE_IFELSE([AC_LANG_PROGRAM([INCLUDES],
[#ifndef SYMBOL
(void) SYMBOL;
#endif
])], [ACTION-IF-FOUND], [ACTION-IF-NOT-FOUND])

This is a decent approach, too.
