gcc 2.96 that came with RH 7, put the dependency files in the
SOURCE directory tree, not the the BUILD directory tree. Installing
gcc 2.95.3 in /usr/local fixed the problem with no changes to my
automake/autoconf set up. That is, dependency files are put in the
BUILD directory tree where they belong.

Any other test you would like me to make on a Red Hat 7.1 system?
I'd be glad to help.
