AM_CONDITIONAL exponential expansion

Hi folk.

cond3.test revision 1.8 was adjusted for AM_CONDITIONAL expansion that
is a lot more compact than 1.4 had. That seems to be a post Automake 1.5
thing only though - the commit was on Mon 13th Aug, 09:37:49 and
cond3.test 1.7 and 1.8 are on the MAIN branch, no other tags..

Is there any chance of getting that back ported to automake 1.5? Or will
there be a 1.51 any time soon? I ask because 5 Mb Makefile.in's are
somewhat bulky, even if they do compress well.
