[PATCH 0/3] caret errors default activation

Hi,

There hasn't been much feedback about the carets, so maybe we can suppose
they are satisfactory, and may now be activated by default?  The following
patches take care of that.

Concerning the testuite: it is run *without* carets, and I believe this to be
a good idea (much less hassle for maintenance), though I might be wrong in
assuming this.  I converted a few more tests to using carets, FWIW, but this
might not be necessary... what do you think, should I install without that
commit?
