The argument you give to let should be quoted.
imadev:~$ declare -A ar
imadev:~$ idbad1="bad string"
imadev:~$ let "ar[$idbad1]+=11"
imadev:~$ declare -p ar
declare -A ar='(["bad string"]="11" )'
