Hi Keith,
I am building I configured binutils-2.17
Note: The 2.18 sources were released a while ago now...

make check failed. The relevant lines are
FAIL: TLS -fpic -shared
FAIL: TLS -fpic and -fno-pic exec
FAIL: TLS -fpic and -fno-pic exec -relax
FAIL: ld-elf/64ksec
FAIL: vers24a
FAIL: vers24b
FAIL: vers24c
FAIL: vers30
FAIL: vers31
I suspect, from previous experiences, that the problem is with new relocation mechanisms that the alpha utilities haven't caught up with. Point me in the right direction and I will be happy to assist with solving these problems, testing fixes and so forth.
First please try building and testing a linker using the latest binutils development sources. It is quite likely that these problems have already been fixed. ( I tested an alpha-linux-gnu cross toolchain and that did not show these failures, but then some of the tests as specific to native toolchains).

Cheers
 Nick
