You're probably using the :ext: connection method and your rsh client is
defective: it's doing line ending conversions which screws up CVS. 
Either use the :server: connection method (if available, it's a built-in
rsh client that works correctly), set $CVS_RSH to include whatever
options your rsh needs, or get a better rsh.
