What about a variable interactive-regexp-mode that takes the
symbol values 'kp, 'elisp, 'perl, with 'kp the default.
("kp" is intended to reference the book by Kernighan & Pike.
I guess that 'kp is what we have now though I've not looked with
thoroughness. There are probably other variations.)
