IIUC, what Michael described is not like Dired+,
but more like another your library zones.el,
i.e. after activating the region, as you move point
in the Dired buffer, the region highlighting should
be updated to put region faces only on file names
using multiple regions, including the file name
of the current line, regardless of where point
is located on the current line: either before or
after the file name, the file name will be highlighted.
