I can reproduce this in Emacs 28, but reading the doc string of that
variable, I'm not at all sure whether this is supposed to work this way
or not.  And:

... it seems this variable was made obsolete in Emacs 24.3?  Martin, is
this a bug, or is this something the user just has to use
`display-buffer-alist' instead to achieve?
