Thank you for your prompt response. I installed the most recent version and the most recent build file. The problem may be that I am using Windows 98. I renamed the gnu exe file after installing the build file but still got the fatal error (it was the Windows error message and it occured immediately before even a logo screen appeared on the desktop). Hopefully this is enough for you to provide further suggestions.
On Windows 9x there might occur problems with a library gnubg is using (namely freetype). Oystein and Nardy seem to still use a slightly older version of it. With the new version I didn't have any problems anymore (Win95).
You can either get the version without freetype from Nardy's site (no drawbacks in functionality, only some numbers don't look overly nice). Or you can download the most recent version of now including the newest freetype library from http://storm.prohosting.com/gnubg/ . I've just compiled the current CVS source and put the binary together with the new weights file (0.14) and a few necessary libraries (due to version differences) there.
