It was doing the same thing without pass-through. So I enabled pass-through
when gnustep-gui was complaining about argv thing. Thinking that perhaps
the pass-through was a hack for getting that to work. Any other ideas?

This is interesting. Did you specifically enable pass-through arguments?
(i.e. configure --enable-pass-through) It shouldn't be enabled by
default. We should probably make gnustep tools work with that enabled,
but that's probaably why it isn't working for you.
