Well, first off. Don't install the versions on that page. Go to
ftp://ftp.gnustep.org/pub/gnustep/core and download the latest version of all
of the packages there or grab one of the snapshots from the snapshot directory.

Second... from what you're saying above, it doesn't seem as though after doing
". /usr/GNUstep/System/Makefiles/GNUstep.sh" as root that you ALSO did it when
you went to configure base as a normal user. Please remember when you become
root, you are a different user. Changes made to that environment will not
propagate to other shells after you cease being root.
Try sourcing the initialization script (GNUstep.sh) and running configure to
see if that helps.

P.S. To the maintainer of the build page: do you think we could replace the
references to obsolete versions of GNUstep packages on that page with some more
generic link so that other users don't have this confusion?
