The version I used seems indeed to be a modified one.

Maybe I should turn this into a feature request. UTF-8 is used
very widely these days. At least the characters also present in
Latin-1 could be processed in the first step, I would think. But
maybe you would have to make major changes even for this limited
Unicode support.

I use the version provided with Fedora Core 3 which seems to indicate
from its changelog information that it descends from the Debian
version. My guess is that they wanted to have all manual pages for
all languages in UTF-8 format and changed groff for this reason.

Did you already suggest to these people that at least a modified
version string would be a good idea? Because then I would not have
had the idea to bother you with a bug report in the first place.
