  From the manual:

Furthermore,
.I groff
supports a
.I \%GROFF_ENCODING
environment variable which is equivalent to its option
.BR \-k .


  Correction:

  GROFF_ENCODING is equivalent to the groff option
"-K${GROFF_ENCODING}".
