Summary: Directories to sort boot procedures in the menu
Version: 0.93
Type: feature request
Message:
I think it would be interesting for GRUB to be capable of manage directories in
the menu to sort different boot procedures in a tree style. As far as I know,
all entries defined in the configuration file are displayed in the menu as a
list, there is no way, at the moment, to classify those entries.
For instance, it would be nice if we can have all different boot procedures of
the same operating system in a directory entry in the menu, then classified by
initialization method (run level), stability, hardware support...
Although I don't feel prepared to submit a patch to implement this feature I
have been browsing by the source code and, if I'm not wrong, the changes would
affect "stage2.c", the definition of the structure of the configuration file
and some distinction between directories and boot procedures in the user
interface. Maybe something in the line of markup languages would be adequate
for the new structure of the configuration file.
Finally, I think this feature would complete a good menu interface for a first
release of GRUB, I suppose, GRUB 1.0. I hope you GRUB's developers will
consider this feature worth to implement.
Thanks for reading,
good job with the GRand Unified Bootloader!
