understand the inner workings of lilo (respectively to know that there is
none for this purpose; and lilo works as I had expected).

No, it is not really the bootloader's job to do that. But if it did, why
not. It will, in my setup, however be the bootloader's job to retrieve some
info from the system about its successes and failures, for consecutive
boots.
