I'm curious -- do you consider proper support for the multiboot graphics
fields a new feature? I have a patch (though I need to clean it a
little) mostly based on http://www.djm.co.za/spoon/grub/vbe.php with
some fixes of my own (such as actually parsing the multiboot header
instead of relying on a "vbematch" command in the menu) and applied to
0.95 and CVS. It would be great to have this merged into upstream.

I consider this a bug in GRUB's implementation of Multiboot. It would be
a pity if this weren't committed because of this freeze. The code is
quite orthogonal to everything else in GRUB.

I also have some fixes for the "wd" network driver (part of ns8390.c).
But those need some work first. As it stands right now GRUB won't
receive a single packet on a wd interface. I'll send this in hopefully
later this week.
