Independent of the concept of "Free Software" etc., everyone has to eat.
If you support their mission, then you should support their collection
a certain level of funding to pay for their food, shelter, electricity,
servers, and bandwidth. They would probably not last more than a few
days without food, nor a few hours without shelter in the winter in
Massachusetts.

They have "Day jobs"? Then that means that they are giving even more of
their life (sort of like the pig requiring more "dedication" to the
cause of providing a breakfast than the hen), and so are entirely
entitled to asking for monetary compensation if they choose.

Frankly, I was not aware that they had a "membership". Perhaps I should
look into this - I have received more from them than I *ever* received
from *all* software vendors over the last 30 years combined. For me, it
would be a very different world indeed without GNU.
