Hi again,

When it comes to dd, I'm always talking about dd'ing to a full USB
stick, not a partition.

I'm not in a situation of testing new USB keys right now, but so far and
out of the box...

*** The following keys do NOT boot :

(All downloaded from their original site, checksum tested AND checked
working on another machine, all created with dd unless otherwise
specified) :

- Ubuntu : ubuntu-17.10-desktop-amd64.iso
- Debian : debian-live-9.3.0-amd64-gnome.iso
- Mint : linuxmint-18.3-cinnamon-64bit.iso

** Keys NOT working, tested after creation BOTH with dd or unetbootin

- Parted Magic : pmagic_2017_09_05.iso
- Manjaro : manjaro-gnome-17.0.6-stable-x86_64.iso

*** Keys booting OK out of the box :

- rEFInd : refind-flashdrive-0.11.0.img
(It may be worth noting that rEFInd is ABLE to chain boot to another key
that would otherwise boot by itself, but trying to chain from rEFInd to
another key that would *NOT* boot fails the exact same way as without
using rEFInd in teh first place)

- Tails : tails-amd64-3.2.iso (created by Tails USB installer from
another same version Tails key)
- tails-amd64-3.3.iso : Made by an auto-upgrade of the previous one

*** Keys that I could finally doctor to boot, after having created them
using unetbootin, then grafted Tails syslinux boot files onto them and
modified syslinux config to allow booting the desired distro with
appropriate parameters :

- Parted Magic : pmagic_2017_09_05.iso
- Manjaro : manjaro-gnome-17.0.6-stable-x86_64.iso

(I didn't have time to doctor more keys, but I would assume the same
result...)

Best regards.
