actually, to avoid (a more fundamental kind of) confusion, auto* tools
side-step explicit version control support entirely.  note that "grep
CVS Makefile" shows nothing that would indicate that make(1) should look
in a directory's CVS subdir for branch info (or for anything else).

this is with "configure --enable-maintainer-mode", so probably a
Makefile otherwise configured would be even less supportive.

i will add this blurb to ANON-CVS.  thanks for pointing this out.
