I have also heard this from many people, BTW. (And I totally agree that
telling them about autoreconf is the way to go.)
reuse the same plan for the introduction of the Automake manual.
Sounds excellent. A tutorial intro to auto* would be very helpful, I
think.

For an auto* tutorial, I think I agree. In the
example-for-GNU-maintainers approach, I see hello as showing basic usage
of gettext, gnulib, auto*, Texinfo, etc. And for purposes of an auto*
tutorial to non-GNU programmers, I doubt you want to get into gettext,
let alone gnulib or texinfo.
So having a separate amhello example seems sensible to me.
