I don't know.  I think on reflection that lookups of "." should start
translators the normal way.  (How else do you want to get them started
if you want that?)

And if you don't want it started, then set NOTRANS.  I think certainly
that fchdir should certainly set NOTRANS when it does its lookup
check.  Is there a reason that this is not sufficient?
