I've run into trouble getting correct results out of file on an old version
of libtool.
Checking the development source, I see the problem still exists:
all BSD versions of files do heed MAGIC, as an environment variable that
says where /usr/bin/file should take its magic.
Ouch.
So, using it to store file name breaks the whole thing. It is still
possible to work around this by setting MAGIC to 'env -i file' and
similar thingies, but this is a gotcha.
It ought to be possible to use another name instead...
