Hi,
I apologize if this has discussed before, I took a quick look at the list
archive and didn't find it:
one thing I noticed for a while is that a fermata (and maybe other symbols,
too) on an up-stem note does not look exactly centered, as it does on a
down-stem note. You can see it also in one of your benchmarking examples [1]:
the Edition Peters version moves the fermata slightly to the right, which
moves the center point nearer to the stem; this results in a more balanced
look, while lilypond's fermata probably is correctly centered but looks as if
it was too far to the left.
