It sounds like there is no ideal solution, but AFAIK Python is shipped with all GUB binaries except MacOS X.Now, I'll admit that we have very few lilypond users on OpenServer and Unicos (WTM is Unicos, anyway?!). And although redhat uses /bin, as long as there's a symlink it should work.
Certainly not for Linux binaries, which include Python. IWBN for MacOS X builds, but this is done in GUB, which I haven't been able to build yet. It's too bad for my little contribution to LilyPond that I'm extremely busy with preparing a PhD subject and getting involved againstJohn, could you change TARGET_PYTHON to be "/usr/bin/env python" for all Linux and OSX builds?
