400 pixels wide sounds good.  Images are included with
   @sourceimage{filename,,,}
(omit the ".png" from the filename)

Could you also give the files names like
  tutorial-windows-1.png
  tutorial-windows-2.png
and the like?


You're correct about putting the pictures in that dir and using git add.   
However, in
order to build the docs, you'll need to
  cd lilypond/Documentation/pictures/
  make doc-clean
  make clean
  make
  make doc

before you do a "general" building of docs.  also, don't forget to
  touch learning.tely
because otherwise it won't be rebuilt.
