As long as there is no reasonably documented way to arrive at a good result, with simple input and the usual defaults resulting in awful output, I have my reservations about everything being fine.
I think that the default horizontal padding should at the very least not be smaller than the usual vertical padding.
I agree. I see two possible solutions:1) change the default horizontal padding to match the 2.12 version. (it may be different code, so just try a bunch of examples and try to imitate the 2.12 behavior)
2) write better docs for this particular tweak -- i.e. in the main Spacing manual chapter -- and dump an item into changes.tely mentioning this new behavior and where to find docs on tweaking it.
Neither of these changes requires Joe, or any code changes (other than the default value, which I guess would be defined in the source code somewhere).
If you decide to take #2 and not changing any default values (as per #1), then this issue should be changed to be Type-Documentation.
