Hi Thomas (and others)

Just observing this from the outside. How many systems are actually not
"compatible" with the modern simple standard $libdir/pkgconfig ? If these
are very few - could it make sense to try to detect these handfull systems
and override the default just for them with a series of if statements?

High quality cross-build must not use hard-coded paths . World is full with
build systems that use heuristic coded paths. All those system are not usable
at all to do cross-builds.
Quite similar is case with normal builds.

As work-around  build system could allow override of hard-coded paths.
