You must have misunderstood the message. Parted doesn't need
special support for any device.
However, if it's not something it recognises, it is possible
you are doing something stupid (like trying to partition
a partition, not a hard disk).
Perhaps you tried that?
(i.e. /dev/ida/c?d?p? as opposed to /dev/ida/c?d?)
Compaq devices have been supported for a long time. What version
of parted do you have?
