My plan of action would be, using the external, well-maintained utilites
as DiskDrake, YAST, QTParted, etc do. This way you can easily add stable
ext2, ext3, reiserfs, reiser4, xfs, ntfs support without worry much about
them in the future.

The number of Parted problems are just growing and aren't solved for 2-3
years and I doubt any volunteer will solve them in the near future or
ever. 

Just focusing on making the partition manipulation part reliable is a
major task in itself, and actually nobody really had the time even for
that for a longer time.
