You guys are very helpful and I regret my initial attitude here.

That rescue CD is the most highly rated in all the (1 year old) reviews;
I think the first thing is to get the website maintainer to put a health warning on it.

I shall attempt this.

True enough, I'm following a trail and got lax with details.
I was using http://www.sysresccd.org/ a few weeks ago, the latest image
they had at the time which I think dates from 2004.
qtparted on that disk has
1) done a reiserfs resize but corrupted LOTS of files,
2) totally hosed the filesystem so that nothing could be recovered.

SystemRescueCD is a disaster. Obsolote, buggy QTParted, progsreiserfs,
etc. They are unmaintained for over a year. Somebody from Ark Linux took
over QTParted maintainership recently but all this means some trivial
changes in a new release, no serious bug fixes.

Now it's understandable why your partition was thrashed.

It would be good if he could also upload this latest version to
ftp://ftp.namesys.com/pub/libreiserfs/

The version there is 18 months old. (Or have the old version removed)

AFAIK the latest release is 0.3.0.6 which has very serious fixes however
I don't know from where it could be downloaded.

I'm even more puzzled to see that Yury has a namesys email address.

That address doesn't work anymore but yes, Yury wrote that non-namesys
code when he worked for namesys (maybe only in his spare time) on which
reiser4 userspace code is also based on now :-)

The responsibility of "whose code" is starting to baffle me. However I
do endeavor to be helpful and get to the bottom of this, to prevent
other people suffering what I did.

Great, but please don't give up too easily :-)
