It could be a firmware bug.
Fedora Project bailed on using GPT by default on BIOS hardware because managing
the exceptions for BIOS with "bugs" not supporting GPT were too many. So I'd
test it with MBR to confirm/deny that it in fact doesn't like GPT and that this
is the source of the problem.
