This scheme was designed such that there is only one node per file, when
split at node, and also such that there is no need to change the scheme in
the future. It is also fits well with your layout as it is designed for such
a situation.

I think that a much better solution should be to regenerate all your manuals,
this way the cross references will be right. Moreover, the new scheme should not
change in the future.
