    Well, it could be a multibyte bug in libc or so.  This is glibc 2.7 on
    Ubuntu hardy, x86_64.

What are your locale settings?  Does it happen with LC_ALL=C?

I compiled 4.12.92 on an x86_64-linux system -- /etc/issue says it is
Red Hat Enterprise Linux Client release 5.2, seems to be glibc 2.5 --
and I see it is setting LANG=en_US.UTF-8 for me, and the ginfo binary
displays the Info file resulting from your test (attached) below.  We do
have the same Info file, I presume.

I hope to get memmem included tomorrow, then make one more pretest.
If we haven't tracked down the problem by then, I guess we'll just have
to live with it.
