I've been seeing similar errors with Jikes 1.16 for the last few days.
[I wish people would compile with Jikes or javac before checking in 
changes.  Gcj's error checking is very lax.]

Brian:  would it be possible to extend your nightly regression stuff
to build the Classpath sources with various compilers and report any
compilation errors?
