I don't know the appropriate path either, but thought I should remind
you that supporting only more recent versions of MSVC++ may be an
option.  Dennis already offered to upgrade to MSVC++ 6 to sync with Jim,
as per this discussion

(Dennis is currently using MSVC++ 5, as Conrad was).  In the same
discussion, several of us agreed that even MSVC++ 6 may be too ancient
to worry about given that MS no longer supports it, especially as MS now
provides MSVC++ 2005 Express Edition (also called MSVC++ 8 Express
Edition) as a free download.

Just trying to provide a friendly reminder that problems with Dennis's
build and the CVS Windows build in general may not be synonymous and
might be fixed by requesting that Dennis upgrade his version of MSVC++.
 I don't have a strong opinion on this either way and will continue to
back whatever is easiest for those actually doing the porting.  :)
