SDR Forum Sets Tech Seminar Date

Summary:

The Software Defined Radio Forum will sponsor a technical conference
and product expo in San Diego, November 11-12. The conference will
focus on technical standards and business applications related to
SDR; it also will provide an international perspective of this new
technology, which was recently approved for commercial use by the
FCC. Discussions will include an overview of the evolution of SDR
technology and how it integrates into existing infrastructures along
with detailing such applications as real-time location awareness for
cellular phones, portable command-station capabilities for crisis
management and advanced encryption for secure military
communications. The deadline for submission of papers is May 1.

ROME, New York (March 11, 2002)-The Software Defined Radio Forum, an
international wireless industry association, will sponsor a Technical
Conference and Product Exposition in San Diego, California, November
11-12, 2002. The conference will focus on technical standards and
business applications related to software-defined radio (SDR) and
also will provide an international perspective of this innovative new
technology, which was recently approved for commercial use by the
Federal Communications Commission.

The conference will cover a number of specific issues, including an
overview of the evolution of SDR technology and how it seamlessly
integrates into existing infrastructures. It will also explore
exciting applications made possible by this technology, such as
real-time location awareness for cellular phones; portable command
station capabilities for crisis management; and advanced encryption
for secure military communications.

"The conference will be a good opportunity for the wireless industry
to learn the very latest on this technology, some exciting new
applications for its use, as well as SDR products that are now
available," said Dr. Bruce Fette, General Dynamics Decision Systems,
Chair of the Conference Organizing Committee. "SDR is one of the
major advancements in wireless communications this century, and by
working together in forums such as this one, we can keep the
industry's momentum moving forward."

Serving as conference co-chairs are industry leaders: Dr. Walter
Tuttlebee, Executive Director, Virtual Centre of Excellence in Mobile
& Personal Communications (Mobile VCE); Dr. Ryuji Kohno, Professor,
Head of Division,Yokohama National University Graduate School of
Engineering, Division of Physics, Electrical & Computer Engineering;
and Dr. Joseph Mitola III, Consulting Scientist.

Paper Submission Guidelines

Organizations interested in submitting a technical paper for the
conference should contact Allan Margulies, chief operating officer
for the SDR Forum, at 315-736-2433 or address@hidden Guidelines
for papers can also be found at the Forum's Web site at
http://www.sdrforum.org/sdr02/main.html. Deadline to submit a paper
is May 1.

About SDR Technology

In SDR, functions traditionally performed by hardware via analog
circuits, such as the generation of the transmitted radio signal and
the tuning and detection of the received radio signal, instead are
performed by software residing in high-speed digital processors.
Because these functions are carried out in software, the radio can be
easily programmed to transmit and receive over a wide range of
frequencies using a variety of transmission formats used around the
world. In addition, the operating parameters of software defined
radio can be easily changed in the field by a simple software change.

SDR provides an efficient and comparatively inexpensive mechanism for
the design and implementation of multi-mode, multi-band,
multi-functional wireless devices that can be enhanced using software
upgrades, thus addressing many of the most challenging issues
confronting the wireless industry. Future applications of the
technology could include:

Cell phones that can be used on a variety of networks, frequency
bands and applications;

Public safety communication devices that can communicate with any
number of separate agencies on the specific bands assigned to each.

Universal handsets that can communicate over a commercial network in
the field, a LAN in the home, and via a short-range Bluetooth network
to various peripherals.

About the Software Defined Radio Forum

The Software Defined Radio Forum is an international industry
association dedicated to supporting the development and deployment of
software defined radio systems that enable flexible and adaptable
architectures in advanced wireless systems. The membership of the SDR
Forum spans commercial, defense, and civil government organizations,
and includes wireless service providers, network operators, component
and equipment manufacturers, hardware and software developers,
regulatory agencies, and academia. Presently numbering more than 100
organizations, the SDR Forum's membership includes major commercial
wireless players from Asia, Europe, and North America. The SDR
Forum's administrative office is headquartered in Rome, N.Y.
