I recently ported our process control system from Hewlett Packard's
HP-RT (realtime UNIX based on LynxOS) to Solaris 8 on the SPARC
platform. The next step (no pun intended) is to migrate to
GNUstep/OPENSTEP. I do not have a lot of time to waste and would
appreciate it if anyone can give me some tips or other information about
GNUstep on Solaris 8. I tried install it about six months ago and was
paritally successful, however it wasn't stable and I am still not
explicitly sure if there are any major limitations that I have to
consider today.
I don't have direct experience with Solaris 8, I'm still using Solaris 7
on our sparcs. I've had no problems compiling/installing/using GNUstep
here. Although other people have had trouble compiling GNUstep on
version 8, I do not know if that was do to a particular problem with
version 8 or some other library problem. In any case I provided them
with a binary that worked well on version 8.
You don't say how extensively you use the AppKit library, but in most
cases all the functionality you need should be there. The GUI (AppKit)
library is still in beta, however. Also note that it does not work that
well with the standard Sun window managers. I'd recommend using the
WindowMaker manager instead (or a Gnome WM if you prefer).
The base (Foundation) library is quite stable and I highly recommend it.
