It's a bad sign when you reply to your own mails...

A gmake distclean and remembering to kill gdomap from a long time ago
fixed this problem. Richard Frith-Macdonald also suggested this as a
fix - he's probably right in thinking that some code fragment or autoconf
from a previous revision was hanging around and polluting the build.
