This sounds very close to what I'm currently implementing for NSDataLink,
NSDataLinkPanel, NSSelection, etc. in GNUstep.

These classes were part of the original OpenStep spec.  I've subscribed to
their mailing list, but I have not received a confirmation.

Hopefully we can see if they're willing to collaborate with us.
