That being said, GNUstep has been in development for 15 years, are
the current efforts primarily aimed at making it a clone of OSX?
Consider it more like a OpenStep compatible clone of Cocoa. There
won't be something like Carbon or an OS kernel anytime soon.
Saying that GNUstep is nothing but a development environment is a
bit of a cop-out, like taking 15 years of development.
For a desktop environment you likely want to have a look at the
Etoile project.
Actually, I consider GNUstep being (more than a few years ago) just a
development environment (and Etoile being just a desktop environment)
is perfectly fine, like in "Do one thing and do that right".
